HAVE A SCROLL

Thought You Couldn't Wear Sparkle by Day? Think Again.

Over conversation the other evening, my boyfriend made a suggestion that maybe my next blog post be something more relatable- as aggressive print mixing or bold colour pairing isn't worn by most (if not at all) in southern california/orange county. And I thought to myself... well no as you'll never see me in a pair of jeans and tee (sorry, won't ever get a blog post on that) but also, if I were currently in a city, let's say... London, the streets would be dominated with patterns on patterns, mixed with different textures, all with the latest and the greatest off the runway. That's my style, that's truly all I know.

And that is what inspired this post: something that dominates my closet...sparkles.

Wearing sequined and glittery pieces during the day might not be second nature to some, but sparkle, which was once reserved for evening, is more and more being considered to be suitable for more casual occasions too.

So how to incorporate sparkle into your daytime wardrobe?

I think the easiest is sequin skirts as they lend themselves particularly well to being worn in the day.

My favourite item of clothing that lends itself particularly well to being laden with sequins or covered in glitter, is a skirt. Specifically one that hits somewhere between just below your knee and your mid-calf as

any shorter and you risk loosing that effortless allure

vs.

any longer and you're teetering on the verge of evening wear

Said sequin skirt should be silhouette-skimming, but not hugging-

(see above point) and can be toned down with something as casual as a t-shirt with a pair of trainers, or if you're feeling a bit adventurous pair with a pop of colour to provide contrast to the sparkles.

Other ideas for how to wear sparkles by day?

  • Offset something sparkly with something practical, i.e. pairing with more classic items instantly gives sparkly pieces wear-anywhere polish

  • Loose silhouettes- opting for a size up. as it will be more flattering, and will also look less contrived

  • Sparkly shoes (no brainer)- investing in a pair of will offer you a one stop way to spice up simple pieces both for work and the weekend

  • Incorporate some tailoring, i.e. check trousers, double-breasted blazer in neutral colouring

Here in my favourite (absolute favourite) sparkly number from Eva Franco, paired with a 3.1 Phillip Lim royal blue pop of colour.
